Where poetry and artificial intelligence meet

No wonder poetry was far from being your favorite at school, even computers struggle with them.

The recently developed Google app, Conversation Mode understands human speech and interprets it. After conquering speech, Google is now endeavoring to fight poetry and be able to translate poems from one language to another via machine translation, called AI Complete. The ultimate aim would be to preserve form and meaning.

Google’s research scientist, Genzel says the most demanding task is to preserve what you want the reader to feel. The research has proved to be promising regarding meter, length and rhythm, the drawback is that the program is quite slow.

It is also challenging how to create the same rhyme scheme because if two English words rhyme, it does not mean that the same pattern can be reformulated in another language. In this case, however, Google goes through the lists of all the possible solutions to find the best words.

According to Nabokov, it is almost impossible for the poet or translator to preserve both form and meaning. Some poets likewise doubt if poems translated even by humans have the same meaning as the originals. Genzel however believes that Poetic Machine Translation has a great potential and computers are doing well in it.
