The report on the language sector we introduced last week discusses human translation in detail since, according to Allied Business Intelligence (1999, in EUATC, 2005), it accounted for 66% of the language market in 1999 and 58% in 2004. This number is a good indicator of the importance of translation within the language service provision sector.
According to a 2005 EUATC report, the translation sector is one of the most segmented in the world. This is in large part attributable to the large number of freelancers. The majority of language service providers in a Common Sense Advisory report published in 2008 employed less than five people; these results were confirmed by the present report, according to which 43% of 700 participants have no employees at all and 36% employ between 1 and 10 persons.
