The Topic of Interpreting in the Study Report to the Directorate for Translation of the European Commission

The report on the language sector we introduced in the news last year deals in depth with the areas of translation and interpreting. Within the topic of interpreting, the report deals with conference interpreting, sign language interpreting, and telephone interpreting, but does not include simultaneous interpreting in a separate chapter.

It is important to note that there are certain difficulties that arise in analyzing the interpreting sector: since the sectors of translation and interpreting are closely intertwined, it is difficult to make a clear distinction and – above all – to establish clear turnover figures for both sectors separately.

According to the data contained in the report, the language of interpreting continues to be English, while a noticeable trend is arising in Europe towards a growing demand for German in both translating and interpreting. The need for telephone interpreting is also increasing, especially in countries where a large number of languages are spoken, for example because of high levels of immigration. The importance of this sector is shown by its market: clients can belong to the government, health care, telecom, utilities, travel, insurance, consumer products, financial services, and interpersonal.
