Study on the Size of the Language Industry in the EU

The Directorate General for Translation of the European Commission has had a report prepared by the Language Technology Centre concerning the size of the language industry in the EU. The study “addresses the need of a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the size of the language industry in the European Union.”

The study was based in part on a questionnaire filled out by language service providers, who were requested to provide details concerning their own operations and their affiliates; the types of language related activities and other activities they perform; the number of employees; details concerning freelancers and subcontractors; the details of the breakdown of the work load between employees, freelancers, and subcontractors; financial details; details of the provided services by language; clientele information; applied language tools and technology; and the effect of the present business and financial world on the company.
