Machine Translation Evaluation in The New York Times

An article by David Bellos, writing for The New York Times, on the advantages and disadvantages of machine translation includes many interesting insights and serves as a good summary of the state of this global phenomenon. From the very beginnings of cold war Russian “deciphering” to Google’s free online machine translation provider (Google Translate), the article explains in layman’s terms the differences between statistical machine translation and rule based machine translation.

The author goes on to explain why the machine translation application can turn surprisingly good answers and where it can go seriously wrong.
