Interpreting after the Japanese quake

Over 300 interpreters ready to help quake-affected foreigners

A volunteer group will send more than 300 Japanese-speaking interpreters to provide linguistic support for foreigners in the quake-hit Japan.

The Japan Guide Consortium Volunteer Interpreters Bureau based in Tokyo will provide interpreting service for relief teams, volunteers from overseas and quake-affected foreigners.

Anyone in need can contact the Bureau via phone or email.

Furthermore, a sociolinguistic study group at Hirosaki University which is situated in the quake-hit Aomori Prefecture has created an online guide with easily understandable signs and instructions in Japanese relating to post-disaster information to help foreigners.

The group also created a brochure which helps municipalities and non-profit organisations to inform foreign evacuees about off-limit places.
