Cultural Variety in Translation: It`s Greek to Me!

A recent report has been carried out on the counterparts of the saying “it’s Greek to me.” The saying reflects the fact that English speaking peoples feel that something unintelligible sounds as if it were, or it might as well be, Greek. So what do their Greek counterparts say? That it sounds like English?

It seems almost all languages have their own version of the saying. The Greek, to continue the above example, name their difficult to understand language of choice as Arabic. Greek as the subject of the saying is quite popular, but not more so than Chinese, to which more than 10 languages refer.
