A machine translation system has been developed for Indian languages by a consortium of 11 Indian institutions. The consortium is led by the International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad (IIIT-H). Unlike Google and other sites that concentrate on English and other international languages, this Sampark project focuses on Indian languages.
The system’s first edition is to provide automatic text translation in six Indian language pairs, while the next edition is slated to provide twelve more. Following the launching of the product, the consortium also plans to look into the commercial applicability of the program, which requires the user to simply copy and paste the text in the respective box and click a button. The project is funded by the Ministry of Communication and IT.
